Evolving research and evaluation indicate that family resource centers are a promising strategy for addressing child abuse and neglect, family violence, family instability, and overall family health and well-being.
CAPC Family Resource Centers are one-stop, multi-service centers that promote the health and well-being of children, families and communities. Services at the Centers include health insurance enrollment assistance; coaching and support for parents; therapeutic services; youth activities, family events, information, and referrals to community resources.
One Family's Story
Two years ago, Stephanie* and her two children (ages 6 and 8) were left with nothing when her husband and their father left; Stephanie. She had been a stay-at-home mom for her kids and was accustomed to having money, possessions, insurance, and yes, a sense of security. Suddenly, it was all gone.
One night, Stephanie’s son suffered a severe asthma attack and needed medical care. She had no health insurance for her kids. “I didn’t know where to go” she remembers. Her doctor at Kaiser told her about the Roseville Family Resource Center.
Since 1993, the Center has helped thousands of families, linking them to healthcare, therapy, specialty classes, and more. “It’s a place where families can get help when they’re experiencing the challenges of life--simple or complex,” says DeAnne Thornton, CAPC’s Executive Director.
Initially, Stephanie says it was difficult to seek the Center’s help. Her pride stood in the way. Once she made the decision, she was met with open arms and concrete solutions. Stephanie learned about low-cost health insurance and found a health plan she could afford. Her kids were enrolled in counseling that helped them get back on there feet. “I swallowed my pride and went in, " she said, adding, "They were just so nice and treated us with dignity and respect.”
