HomeFirst
CAPC recently completed a nationwide assessment of major trends in child abuse prevention and the needs of families in the Sierra-Sacramento region. A major finding of this study was the utilization of home visitation to improve parenting practices and prevent child abuse.
CAPC conducted an exhaustive search for a model home visitation program suited to the needs of parents across our region. The home is the first and most important learning environment for children; and parents are their child’s most influential teacher. Home visitation delivers education and family support services directly to parents with young children, providing guidance on how parents can enhance their child’s development.
The Parents as Teachers (PAT) home-based model was selected by CAPC for its strong research base and proven outcomes. PAT children score higher on kindergarten readiness tests and on standardized measures of achievement in early grades. Parents in PAT are more involved in their children's schooling, read more to their children, and are more confident in their parenting role.
